This is a great tutorial, it really is helping me get into icon making. ^^ But I just have a question:

How do you add the texture into a layer? My Photoshop isn't giving me the option to paste it into a new layer....

Thanks :D

Once you have an image copied to your clipboard, just go to Edit>;Paste (or Ctrl+V) and that should paste it in as a new layer.

Now, if you're having problems getting certain textures out of the tut itself, this is what you do: Save the tutorial image to your computer, open it in Photoshop, use the crop too to crop off the texture you want, select all, copy, then paste into your psd where your icon is.
